Channeling a 1961 cinematic gem, Virginie Viard's SS23 collection for Chanel offers a modern twist on silver-screen elegance.
Back in 1961, Madame Coco Chanel designed some costumes for the leading actress Delphine Seyrig in the French film L’année dernière à Marienbad by Alain Resnais. Set inside a Baroque palace in Germany surrounded by French gardens, the costumes made a crucial part of the film’s narrative, enabling viewers to understand the chronology of the film’s enigmatic plot. Madame Chanel’s vision for Seyrig’s onscreen character — which included silver lamé and white chiffon dresses — served as the inspiration for Virginie Viard‘s Spring/Summer 2023 collection for the French Maison. As a part of her Spring/Summer 2023 collection for Chanel, Viard explored the costumes that Madame Chanel created for the film and reimagined them with a modern twist.

A short film by Inez & Vinoodh starring Kristen Stewart preceded the Chanel Spring/Summer 2023 show, where Stewart appears exiting the arthouse cinema, Le Champo, after watching L’année dernière à Marienbad. Inez & Vinoodh paid homage to the film’s decadent, dream-like setting, while Virginie Viard interpreted Coco Chanel’s creations for the modern day.

.To celebrate the theatrically inspired collection, Savoir Flair produced a glamorous editorial campaign, drawing inspiration from Maison’s relationship with the cinematic universe. Shot in black and white, the stunning images give us a voyeuristic perspective, making the model seem like a fictional onscreen character that exists in a fantastical world of her own, much like the movie.
